Boundaries for Success
Audience: Frontline workers in the homeless sector in Calgary
Responsibilities: Instructional design (action mapping, storyboarding, mockups, prototype, full build), visual design, audio narration, character animation
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Vyond, Figma, Audacity, MindMeister, Google Docs
Failure to establish healthy boundaries at work remains the most common performance issue with frontline staff in the Calgary homeless sector. This is a two-pronged issue.
First, frontline workers regularly take on responsibilities that lie beyond their job description. While helping clients is essential, understanding the boundaries of one’s role as a case manager is equally important in helping homeless clients reach their goals. Effective case management requires staff to connect their clients to the many resources the city of Calgary provides to homeless individuals. Secondly, frontline workers often fail to set clear and consistent boundaries with their clients.
Frontline staff make it harder on themselves as well as their clients when failing to address expectations for goal setting and guidelines for communication. In turn, this renders them ineffective in helping their clients move out of homelessness and secure housing.
A self-paced, story-driven eLearning product is the best solution for the following reasons...
Learners are geographically dispersed. Frontline workers are highly mobile, and they can access an eLearning experience from anywhere.
Learners can engage with the content at any time, including from the privacy and comfort of their own home.
The eLearning experience can reach an infinite number of learners; there’s no need to be physically present for this training.
Learners can build their knowledge and decision-making skills in a low-stakes environment with no risk of embarrassment or harming clients.
Learners can practice making decisions through real life scenarios they will encounter in the field.
Like most of the eLearning experiences I'm currently working on, I’m using ADDIE as a guide on this featured project. In the Analysis phase, I held several meetings with the director of a housing program with decades of experience in the Calgary homeless sector. I was able to identify the main challenges facing frontline workers and used this to create an action map and text-based storyboard.
I'm still in the Design phase of this project and am using feedback to refine the storyboard and wireframes ahead of full development. Check back soon for updates!
